PREPARE FOR THE VISIT

Make the septic inspection easier to explain and review.

Use this checklist to organize the information you already have and agree on the visit’s scope. The provider determines the appropriate inspection methods for your property and the concern you report.

Before arranging the visit

Explain whether the visit concerns routine maintenance, a current symptom or another specific need. Ask what the quoted inspection includes, how findings will be recorded and whether additional investigation would need separate approval.

Gather the permit, design or record drawing, earlier inspection reports and service invoices that you already hold. EPA identifies system and maintenance records as useful inspection inputs. For missing county documents, start with the county’s records guidance; availability for an individual parcel needs confirmation.

  • Property location and parcel reference, if known.
  • A short timeline of the concern and earlier work.
  • Existing system documents and maintenance history.
  • Your questions about access, scope and the written report.

Understand what may be examined

EPA describes inspections that review tank condition, accumulated solids, filters where fitted, pipes, distribution equipment and signs around the drainfield. Cameras or further investigation may be appropriate in some cases; ask what is included in your visit.

Leave opening, testing and examination of components to the professional. Ask for explanations of the evidence so you can distinguish a confirmed finding from an area that could not be assessed.

Review the report before a work proposal

Ask the provider to identify the system reviewed, the observations made and any limitations. Keep the report, photographs supplied by the provider and recommendations together. Check that a later repair proposal refers to the same findings and names the affected components.

Questions can be straightforward: What is known? What remains uncertain? What further information is needed before choosing the work? Who will explain changes if the investigation reveals a different condition?

Check the appropriate local next step

For proposed construction or changes to the system, ask Kittitas County Public Health which review or permit steps apply. A maintenance visit and a construction approval serve different purposes. Crosswind Creative can discuss the resources on this site; arrange the inspection and its terms directly with the provider you choose.
